Die Deutsche Post ist die Nachfolgerin der Deutschen Bundespost, die 1995 privatisiert wurde und im Jahr 2000 zu einem vollständig unabhängigen Unternehmen wurde. DHL Express ist eine hundertprozentige Tochtergesellschaft. Seit ihrer Privatisierung hat die Deutsche Post ihr Geschäftsfeld durch Akquisitionen erheblich erweitert. Ende 2014 erwarb der Konzern die StreetScooter GmbH, einen kleinen Hersteller von Elektrofahrzeugen. Zwei Jahre später erwarb der Konzern UK Mail, einen geschäftsorientierten Postdienst im Vereinigten Königreich, für 315,5 Millionen US-Dollar (243 Millionen Pfund). Das ehemalige Unternehmen wurde eine Abteilung des europäischen Paketnetzes der Deutschen Post.

Der Konzern Deutsche Post DHL erzielte 2016 ein Ergebnis vor Zinsen und Steuern (EBIT) von 3,491 Milliarden Euro (+44,8 Prozent gegenüber 2015), bei einem Nettogewinn von 2,64 Milliarden Euro bei einem Umsatz von 57,334 Milliarden Euro. 1999: Die Deutsche Post World Net erwirbt das niederländische Distributionsunternehmen Van Gend & Loos von Nedlloyd und im Jahr 2000 das Schweizer Distributionsunternehmen Danzas.

20. November 2000: Die Deutsche Post AG wird durch einen Börsengang an der Frankfurter Wertpapierbörse zu einem vollständig privaten Unternehmen mit einem neuen Verwaltungsrat. Der deutsche Staat verkauft ein Drittel seiner Aktien und die KfW-Bank verkauft einen Teil ihrer Aktien.

Dezember 2002: Die Post wird privatisiert: Die Deutsche Post AG erwirbt die restlichen Anteile an DHL International.
