Der United States Postal Service (USPS; auch bekannt als Post Office, U.S. Mail oder Postal Service) ist eine unabhängige Behörde der Exekutive der Bundesregierung der Vereinigten Staaten, die für die Bereitstellung von Postdiensten in den Vereinigten Staaten, einschließlich ihrer Inselgebiete und assoziierten Staaten, zuständig ist. Es ist eine der wenigen Regierungsbehörden, die von der Verfassung der Vereinigten Staaten ausdrücklich autorisiert sind.

Die Ursprünge der USPS gehen auf das Jahr 1775 zurück, als Benjamin Franklin während des Zweiten Kontinentalkongresses zum ersten Generalpostmeister ernannt wurde. Am 18. März 1970 organisierten Postbeamte in New York City - bestürzt über niedrige Löhne und schlechte Arbeitsbedingungen und ermutigt durch die Bürgerrechtsbewegung - einen Streik gegen die Regierung der Vereinigten Staaten. Der Streik betraf zunächst nur Postbedienstete in New York City, fand aber schließlich die Unterstützung von über 210.000 Beschäftigten der US-Postbehörde im ganzen Land[8] Der Streik endete zwar ohne jegliche Zugeständnisse seitens der Bundesregierung, ermöglichte es den Postbedienstetengewerkschaften und der Regierung jedoch schließlich, einen Vertrag auszuhandeln, der den Gewerkschaften das meiste von dem gab, was sie wollten, und am 12. August 1970 unterzeichnete Präsident Richard Nixon das Gesetz zur Neuorganisation der Postdienste. Das Gesetz ersetzte die Postabteilung auf Kabinettsebene durch eine neue Bundesbehörde, den United States Postal Service,[9] und trat am 1. Juli 1971 in Kraft.
