Le service postal des États-Unis (USPS ; également connu sous le nom de Post Office, U.S. Mail, ou Postal Service) est une agence indépendante du pouvoir exécutif du gouvernement fédéral des États-Unis chargée de fournir des services postaux aux États-Unis, y compris dans les zones insulaires et les États associés. Il s'agit de l'une des rares agences gouvernementales explicitement autorisées par la Constitution des États-Unis.

Les origines de l'USPS remontent à 1775, lors du deuxième Congrès continental, lorsque Benjamin Franklin a été nommé premier ministre des Postes. Le département des postes a été créé en 1792 avec l'adoption de la loi sur le service postal. Il a été élevé au rang de département ministériel en 1872, et a été transformé par la loi de réorganisation postale de 1970 en une agence indépendante, l'United States Postal Service[4]. Le service postal est légalement tenu de desservir tous les Américains, quelle que soit leur situation géographique, à un prix et une qualité uniformes. La Poste a un accès exclusif aux boîtes aux lettres marquées "U.S. Mail" et aux boîtes aux lettres personnelles aux États-Unis, mais doit maintenant faire face à la concurrence de services privés de livraison de colis, tels que United Parcel Service, FedEx et Amazon.

Le 18 mars 1970, les travailleurs postaux de la ville de New York, bouleversés par les bas salaires et les mauvaises conditions de travail, et encouragés par le mouvement des droits civiques, ont organisé une grève contre le gouvernement des États-Unis. La grève a d'abord impliqué les travailleurs postaux de la ville de New York seulement, mais elle a finalement obtenu le soutien de plus de 210 000 travailleurs du Département des Postes des Etats-Unis dans tout le pays[8]. Bien que la grève se soit terminée sans aucune concession de la part du gouvernement fédéral, elle a finalement permis aux syndicats des travailleurs postaux et au gouvernement de négocier un contrat qui a donné aux syndicats la plupart de ce qu'ils voulaient, ainsi que la signature de la Loi sur la réorganisation postale par le Président Richard Nixon le 12 août 1970. Cette loi a remplacé le ministère des Postes au niveau du cabinet par une nouvelle agence fédérale, le Service postal des États-Unis[9], et est entrée en vigueur le 1er juillet 1971.

Le service postal américain emploie 633 188 travailleurs, ce qui en fait le troisième employeur civil des États-Unis, derrière le gouvernement fédéral et Walmart.
