Bahrain Post is the federal government company responsible for the post in Bahrain. Bahrain Post belongs to the Bahrain Ministry of Transportation.
The very first post office in Bahrain opened on 1 August 1884 in the capital Manama. This was a sub-office of the Indian Post Office at Bushire in Iran, both of which became part of the Bombay Postal Circle. This stayed the only post office till 1946. A variety of local stamps were provided in between 1953 and 1961 which, whilst planned just for domestic mail, are known used on worldwide mail. These stamps all portrayed Sheikh Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa and are similar in design to the later 1960 series.
The first stamps particularly created for both worldwide and domestic mail were a conclusive set issued on 1 July 1960, which featured Sheikh Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa with Arabic text at the top. In 1964 a new definitive set was provided illustrating Sheikh Isa bin Salman al-Khalifa.
When a more conclusive set was released, the Bahrain Post Office completely took over postal services from Britain on 1 January 1966.
After stating independence in 1971, Bahrain joined the International Postal Union in December 1973. Bahrain Post later joined the Arab Postal Union in May 1986.
