Taiwan Post - Chunghwa Post - information about carrier

Chunghwa Post Co., Ltd. is the official postal service of Taiwan (likewise referred to as the Republic of China). When it was rearranged into a government-owned corporation, Chunghwa Post was a federal government agency of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications till 2003.

History

Media reports noted that "Taiwan Post" was more constant with the name Governor Liu Ming-Chuan utilized when he established the Taiwan Post Administration in 1888. Additionally, Taiwan Post began printing "Taiwan" instead of "The Republic of China" on postage stamps.

On February 9, the board of directors fixed to change the name of the corporation to Taiwan Post Co. (台灣郵政) after a hold-up of several hours due to protests from unions. However, a bill to recognize the modification of law was blocked by the KMT-dominated legislature. As a result, the law still mandated the postal monopoly for "Chunghwa Post" despite the name modification.

In 2008, the Kuomintang took power in Taiwan following a legislative election victory and the election of Ma Ying-jeou to the presidency. Following his election, Ma Ying-jeou openly stated that he did not want his inauguration celebration stamps to be marked "Taiwan Post" due to the fact that the name modification was "unlawful". The postal service marked the inauguration stamps with Chinese characters for the "Republic of China", along with the "Republic of China (Taiwan)" in English.

On 1 August 2008, the company solved to reverse the name change and restored the name "Chunghwa Post".
