Copa Airlines Cargo - information about carrier
Compañía Panameña de Aviación, S.A., (frequently referred to and branded merely as "Copa Airlines")is the flag carrier of Panama. Copa is a subsidiary of Copa Holdings, S.A. as well as a member of Star Alliance.
In 1947, a group of business owners takes the effort, with the technical and economic support of Pan American Airways, to discovered the COMPAÑÍA PANAMEÑA DE AVIACIÓN, S.A. (COPA). The business begins operations with 24 employees stationed in the capital and 2 provinces in the western region of the nation. The airline company makes domestic flights to three cities within the Republic of Panama using 3 Douglas C-47 aircraft. A brief time later, Guatemala is included as a new destination, and the airline company ends up being an international provider. By 1977 Copa has extended its route network both within and outside the country's borders, covering the Central American region and 2 cities in Colombia.
In 1979, bowing to business and monetary conditions, Copa is obliged to stop flying its domestic routes; this stage is finished in 1980, and Copa becomes an exclusively international airline company. In the 80s, Copa purchases its very first B737-100 airplane, adding flights to Cartagena, Port au Prince, Santo Domingo, Kingston, San Juan and Miami. Likewise, during this decade, Copa purchases a B737-200 "combination" airplane and starts operation of cargo flights to select locations in the Caribbean and Central America.
During the decade of the 90s, Copa expands its paths, adding Mexico, Santiago, Cali, Bogotá, Montego Bay, Quito, Guayaquil, Lima, Buenos Aires and Havana. In 1997 Copa Cargo in Panama moves to the Panama Air Cargo Terminal, one of the most contemporary cargo centers in the region, and combines its airfreight service.
In 1998 Continental Airlines' acquisition of 49 percent of Copa's shares is announced, representing among the most substantial industrial alliances in Latin American air travel. By May of the following year, Copa starts to run Boeing 737-700 Next Generation aircraft. From 2000 to 2005, Copa Airlines continues its yearly growth, including frequencies to existing destinations and initiating operations to new destinations such as Cancun, Orlando, Sao Paulo, Los Angeles and San Andres.
Presently, Copa Airlines has 22 737-700 and 737-800 traveler airplane with an average capacity of 3,000 kilos of cargo per plane. Daily they transfer some 75,000 kilos of courier, mail and cargo products. Copa supports this traveler flight network with 737-200, 727-100 and 727-200 freight aircraft, with set up flights to San José, Managua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Santo Domingo, Kingston, Bogotá, Cali, Medellin, and Guayaquil, covering charter cargo flight needs within the area.
