Hermes Germany - information about carrier

Hermes Europe GmbH is a German delivery business headquartered in Hamburg, owned by the retail business Otto GmbH.

The company was established in 1972 in West Germany and entered the market in East Germany in 1990. It broadened to France in 1997, the United Kingdom in 2000, Austria in 2007, Italy in 2009 and Russia in 2010. In Germany, Hermes Logistik Gruppe (HLG) is the country's biggest post-independent service provider of shipments to private clients.

The business was named as the second-worst parcel delivery services in the United Kingdom by a customer survey in January 2014, with 30% of customers ranking their experience as "bad".

In September 2016, the government asked for that HM Revenue and Customs think about releasing an investigation into Hermes after workers declared they got pay equivalent to lower than the existing base pay in the United Kingdom. During this examination, a whistleblower claimed that Hermes persuaded managers into deceiving an HMRC investigation.

In June 2018, an employment tribunal in Leeds found that a group of 65 carriers, supported by the GMB union through lawyers Leigh Day, were employees entitled to employment rights, consisting of base pay and holiday pay, instead of self-employed as Hermes asserted. The GMB stated the judgment was most likely to affect 14,500 Hermes carriers. Hermes is thinking about an appeal.

Throughout the 2020 coronavirus outbreak in the United Kingdom, Hermes said it would pay its UK motorists who required to self-isolate just ₤20 a day, and payment would be made only to those who usually made less than ₤90 a day. As a result, nearly half of its employees would receive nothing while payments to the rest would be topped at ₤280.
