Lesotho Post - information about carrier
The Lesotho Postal Services has a long history with the Republic of South Africa. The nearest Post Office that Basotho used in 1840 was a Post Office in Colesberg, South Africa. The very first Postal Agency was opened in Maseru on the 1st of January 1872. In 1933 the Basutoland Post Office entered into being.
The Postal Administration of Lesotho is a government department under the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology and operates under the Post Office Act no. 13 of 1979. This act produced a semi-autonomous department that is self- financing. In 1994 a Post Office Fund was developed to represent the Postal earnings and expenses.
Although the Postal Department is required to be self- accounting, its operations and management is within the confines of Public Service Rules and Regulations. The Finances of the Department are handled in compliance with the Financial Rules and Regulations.
