Pony Express - information about carrier
The Pony Express was a mail service delivering messages, newspapers, and mail utilizing relays of horse-mounted riders that ran from April 3, 1860, to October 24, 1861, between Missouri and California in the United States of America.
Operated by Central Overland California and Pike's Peak Express Company, the Pony Express was a great monetary investment to the U.S. During its 18 months of operation, it decreased the time for messages to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to about 10 days. Many people used the Pony Express as a communication link.
In spite of a heavy subsidy, the Pony Express was not a monetary success and went bankrupt in eighteen months, when faster telegraph service was established. However, it demonstrated that a merged transcontinental system of interactions might be established and operated year-round. When replaced by the telegraph, the Pony Express rapidly became glamorized and became part of the tradition of the American West. Its dependence on the capability and endurance of private young, fast horses and durable riders was seen as evidence of rugged American individualism of the Frontier times.
The idea of a fast mail route to the Pacific coast was triggered mainly by California's newly found prominence and its rapidly growing population. The demand for a faster method to get the mail and other communications to and from this westernmost state became even higher as the American Civil War approached.
William Russell, Alexander Majors, and William B. Waddell were the 3 founders of the Pony Express. They were currently in the freighting and drayage company. At the peak of the operations, they utilized 6,000 men, owned 75,000 oxen, countless warehouses and wagons, plus a sawmill, a meatpacking plant, an insurance coverage and a bank company.
After Morehead was bought out and retired, Waddell merged his business with Russell's, altering the name to Waddell & Russell. They held government agreements for providing army products to the western frontier, and Russell had a similar concept for agreements with the U.S. Government for fast mail shipment.
By making use of a short route and using installed riders instead of conventional stagecoaches, they proposed to establish a fast mail service between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California, with letters provided in 10 days, a duration numerous said was difficult. The initial price was set at $5 per 1⁄2 ounce (14 g), then $2.50, and by July 1861 to $1. The creators of the Pony Express intended to win a special government mail contract, however that did not happen.
Russell, Majors, and Waddell arranged and put together the Pony Express in two months in the winter season of 1860. The endeavor put together 120 riders, 184 stations, 400 horses, and several hundred workers during January and February 1861.
Majors was a religious guy and solved "by the aid of God" to conquer all troubles. He presented each rider with an unique edition Bible and needed this oath, which they were also required to sign.
In 1860, there had to do with 186 Pony Express stations that were about 10 miles (16 km) apart along the Pony Express path. At each station stop, the express rider would alter to a fresh horse, taking only the mail pouch called a mochila (from the Spanish for pouch or knapsack) with him.
The employers worried the value of the pouch. They typically stated that, if it came to be, the horse and rider ought to die prior to the mochila did. The mochila was tossed over the saddle and kept in place by the weight of the rider sitting on it. Each corner had a cantina or pocket. Bundles of mail were put in these cantinas, which were padlocked for safety. The mochila could hold 20 pounds (9 kg) of mail in addition to the 20 pounds (9 kg) of material continued the horse. Eventually, everything except one revolver and a water sack was removed, permitting an overall of 165 pounds (75 kg) on the horse's back. Riders, who could not weigh over 125 pounds (57 kg), changed about every 75 - 100 miles (120 - 160 km) and rode day and night. In emergencies, a given rider may ride 2 stages back to back, over 20 hours on a quickly moving horse.
It is unidentified if riders tried crossing the Sierra Nevada in winter season, but they definitely crossed central Nevada. By 1860 there was a telegraph station in Carson City, Nevada Territory. The riders received $100 a month as pay. A similar wage for common labor at the time was about $0.43 -$ 1 daily.
Alexander Majors, among the creators of the Pony Express, had gotten more than 400 horses for the job. He chose horses from around the west, paying approximately $200. These averaged about 14.2 hands (58 inches, 147 cm) high and balanced 900 pounds (410 kg) each; therefore, the name pony was suitable, even if not strictly correct in all cases.
The around 1,900-mile-long (3,100 km) route roughly followed the Oregon and California Trails to Fort Bridger in Wyoming, and then the Mormon Trail (called the Hastings Cutoff) to Salt Lake City, Utah. From there it followed the Central Nevada Route to Carson City, Nevada Territory prior to passing over the Sierra into Sacramento, California.
The path began at St. Joseph, Missouri on the Missouri River, it then followed what is modern-day U.S. Highway 36 (United States 36 the Pony Express Highway) to Marysville, Kansas, where it turned northwest following Little Blue River to Fort Kearny in Nebraska. Through Nebraska it followed the Great Platte River Road, cutting through Gothenburg, Nebraska, clipping the edge of Colorado at Julesburg, Colorado, and passing Courthouse Rock, Chimney Rock, and Scotts Bluff, before showing up at Fort Laramie in Wyoming. From there it followed the Sweetwater River, passing Independence Rock, Devil's Gate, and Split Rock, to Fort Caspar, through South Pass to Fort Bridger and then down to Salt Lake City. From Salt Lake City it generally followed the Central Nevada Route blazed by Captain James H. Simpson of the Corps of Topographical Engineers in 1859. This path roughly follows today's United States 50 throughout Nevada and Utah. It crossed the Great Basin, the Utah-Nevada Desert, and the Sierra Nevada near Lake Tahoe prior to showing up in Sacramento. Mail was then sent out through steamer down the Sacramento River to San Francisco. In a few instances when the steamer was missed out on, riders took the mail by means of horseback to Oakland, California.
Stations
The stations and station keepers were important to the effective, timely and smooth operation of the Pony Express mail system. At each swing station, riders would exchange their exhausted mounts for fresh ones, while "home stations" offered room and board for the riders between runs. Each rider rode about 75 miles (120 km) per day.
The very first Westbound Pony Express trip left St. Joseph on April 3, 1860, and showed up ten days later in Sacramento, California, on April 14. These letters were sent out undercover from the East to St. Joseph, and never ever directly went into the U.S. mail system. Today there is only a single letter known to exist from the inaugural westbound journey from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. The mailing illustrated below is on a pre-stamped (embossed) envelope, first provided by the U.S. Post Office in 1855, used 5 years later here.
The messenger delivering the mochila from New York and Washington, DC, missed a connection in Detroit and gotten here in Hannibal, Missouri, two hours late. The railway cleared the track and dispatched an unique engine called Missouri with a one-car train to make the 206-mile (332 km) trek across Missouri in a record 4 hours 51 minutes, approximately 40 miles per hour (64 km/h). It came to Olive and 8th Street, a couple of blocks from the business's brand-new head office in a hotel at Patee House at 12th and Penn Street, St. Joseph, and the company's close-by stables on Penn Street. The very first pouch consisted of 49 letters, five personal telegrams, and some documents for San Francisco and intermediate points.
St. Joseph Mayor M. Jeff Thompson, William H. Russell, and Alexander Majors gave speeches before the mochila was handed off. The flight began at about 7:15 pm. The St. Joseph Gazette was the only paper consisted of in the bag.
The St. Joseph Weekly West (April 4, 1860) reported Johnson William Richardson was the very first rider. The first westbound rider carried the pouch throughout the Missouri River transport to Elwood, Kansas. The very first horse-ridden leg of the Express was just about 1⁄2 mile (800 m) from the Express stables/railroad location to the Missouri River shuttle at the foot of Jules Street.
The very first westbound mochila reached its location, Sacramento, on April 14, at 1:00 am.
The very first eastbound Pony Express journey left Sacramento, California, on April 3, 1860, and came to its destination 10 days later on in St. Joseph, Missouri. From St. Joseph, letters were put in the U.S. mails for delivery to eastern destinations. There are only 2 letters known to exist from the inaugural eastbound journey from San Francisco to St. Joseph.
