About SkyNet
SkyNet is the first-ever drone delivery service to launch in New Zealand. It was launched by Mega Web Ltd., on November 30, 2018, after they received permission from the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand (CAA). Once approved, SkyNet promised its customers that their deliveries will be made within minutes after ordering online.
They also claimed to have a fleet of over 100 drones, which will be used for delivery. The SkyNet team revealed that they chose New Zealand as their first country due to its geographic location and the ability of people from other countries being able to order online without any problems. Because many customers are coming from overseas, it would ease the process if there was no need for additional customs or border checks before sending out deliveries.
SkyNet's history is filled with controversies, though. Once their service was launched, people started to question the safety of drones and how they will be able to fly in New Zealand airspace without any problems from Air Traffic Control. CAA responded that there is no possible way SkyNet can operate a drone delivery system because it does not have enough staff or resources for such a thing yet.
The most recent controversy is over SkyNet's business registration documents being canceled by Inland Revenue Department (IRD). The reason stated for this cancellation is “a failure to file GST returns” which violates one of the conditions set up by IRD before permitting to start a business operation in New Zealand.
Services SkeNet is offering:
- SkyNet's package delivery service, which uses drones to deliver goods.
- Delivery management solution for businesses in New Zealand and around the world that would like to use Skynet drone deliveries instead of traditional ones.
- SkyNet's eCommerce platform is used for online shopping.
- SkyNet's tracking system that allows customers to track their packages from the moment it is sent out.
The pricing structure of SkyNet:
- $15 for single package delivery, including any customs fees and taxes.
- $75 per hour for an unlimited number of deliveries within the same city. Customers can choose different cities in New Zealand or around the world when making orders if they want to use this option. This price only applies if there are no additional charges added because of certain special conditions such as weather issues which might delay a drone arriving at its destination on time, etc.
- The fulfillment fee starts from $90 depending on how big the product shipment is expected to be (the bigger, the more expensive). It also depends on the weight of goods and distance it needs to be delivered.
