South Africa Post Office - information about carrier
South African Post Office (SAPO) is the national postal service of South Africa and as a state-owned business, its only shareholder is the South African government. In terms of South African law, the Post Office is the only entity lawfully permitted to accept reserved mail and as such operates a monopoly. It uses over 23,800 individuals and runs more than 2,486 postal outlets throughout the country and for that reason has a presence in nearly each and every single town and city in South Africa. Its main subsidiary is Postbank, a monetary companies, headed by Shaheen Adam.
The history of postal services in Southern Africa can be traced back over 500 years. Sailors traveling to or from the Orient past the south coast of Africa, put letters under postal stones, hoping that they would be found and provided by other ships.
On 2 March 1792 the acting governor of the Cape, Johan Isaac Rhenius, opened a post workplace in a space beside the kitchen at the Castle in Cape Town. This was the start of what became the South Africa Post Office (SAPO). By 1805 there was a routine inland mail service in between Algoa Bay and False Bay in the Cape, using farmers on horseback. A mail wagon ran two times a week between Cape Town and the town of Stellenbosch. In 1806, Sir David Baird ruled that Khoi, shackled indigenous individuals of the Cape, would be utilized to communicate letters and little plans. A mail boat service was presented in between England and the Cape in 1815 and in 1848 the then Transvaal government-appointed postmen to transport main mail. Prior to this development mail had actually been sent out by special messenger, or by any readily available transport. The very first stamp provided in South Africa was the Cape Triangular stamp introduced in 1853. The stamp has two worths - the fourpence blue and the one cent red. In 1860 the first post boxes were erected in the Cape and numerous train lines were completed and used to carry mail. The very first mail train was introduced in 1883.
In 1867, diamonds were found in South Africa, and in 1905, the biggest diamond worldwide, the Cullinan, was sent out to London as a typical recorded postal short article. Mail was transported by motor automobile for the very first time in 1911, and SAPO explored using camels to deliver mail, changing them with an ox cart service in 1914. In December 1911, the very first airmail delivery accompanied a 7.5 min flight from Kenilworth in Cape Town to Muizenberg. The mail was brought in the exact same model of aircraft as that used 2 years earlier by Louis Bleriot to cross the England/France channel.
By 1919, there was a routine motor cars and truck service, and routine airmail service was introduced the same year. The first overseas airmail service was introduced in 1932, and the Springbok Air Service was presented between the Union of South Africa and Britain in 1945. Because of its apartheid policies at the time, the first definitive stamp series of the Republic of South Africa was issued on 31 May 1961 after South Africa withdrew from the Commonwealth.
In 1973, postal codes were presented to facilitate automated mail sorting and standardized letters were presented later that year. In 1994, South Africa was readmitted to the Universal Postal Union following the end of apartheid. SAPO currently runs under a 25-year license granted by the Independent Communication Authority of South Africa (ICASA) and in regards to this must supply a universal service to all the residents of the country.
The South African Post Office Group currently includes a variety of subsidiaries and divisions operating in the fields of mail, monetary services, logistics, home, electronic commerce and retail services. Standard collection, arranging and delivery of parcels and letters make up the primary service activity of the group, responsible for almost 65% of the group's profits in 2010/12. In the 2010/11 fiscal year, nearly 1,5 billion mail pieces were processed. To distribute this volume and process of mail items the group runs 6 big mail centers and more than 40 depots across the republic. The group has, however, suffered a decline in standard mail volumes over the last 3 years. This decline remains in line with similar declines experienced by the majority of postal operators throughout the world as traditional mail as a communication medium is substituted by electronic options such as email and more just recently cell phones.
The second-largest activity of the group is monetary services which it offers through its savings banks that operate under the name Postbank. The Postbank itself was formed in 1910 and is the largest cost savings bank in the nation. More than 6 million customers have accounts with Postbank making it one of the largest banks in South Africa as determined by client numbers. The Postbank is a deposit-taking organization just and hence does not offer credit items, just cost savings and investment products.
