The Department of Posts, functioning under the brand name Sri Lanka Post (Sinhala: ත ප ල ද ප ර තම න ත ව, ශ ර ල ක Tæpæl Departhamenthuwa, Shri Lanka), is a government-operated postal system in Sri Lanka. The postal head office in the General Post Office which is located in Colombo.
The head of the Sri Lanka Post is the Postmaster-General, presently Ranjith Ariyaratne. Sri Lanka Post employs more than 22,000 staff members in different positions to personnel and supports the 4738 post offices across the coun Sri Lanka Post has a long history of 209 years, dating back to 1798, when the colonial Dutch rulers began 5 post workplaces in the Maritime Districts under their control.
When E. Bletterman was the Postmaster-General for the entire island, the British took control of the nation in 1815. Mr. Lewis Sansoni succeeded Bletterman as the second Postmaster General in 1817. The 3rd Postmaster General was Major G. Stewart, who extended the postal services to major towns in the nation. They re-organized the postal service and others ultimately developed a permanent Post Office in Colombo in 1882. By 1895 it got its own structure, opposite the Governor General's home - the Queens's House on Queen's Street, presently the Janadhipath Mawatha (President's Street). During the disturbances in the country, the GPO was vacated its previous structure and into today Postal Headquarters. The brand-new structure, including 9 floorings of modern centers, is the center of operations and administration. The Postal Museum, too, is housed in this building.
