About Swiss Post
Swiss Post is Switzerland's national postal system. It has operated since 1848 when the country was still a confederation of small states rather than united as it is today. Swiss Post provides many services for its citizens and businesses in Switzerland besides standard mail delivery. The company offers online digital signature capabilities to authenticate transactions sent by email or file transfer protocol, among other things.
Swiss Post's history goes back to the early years of Switzerland's federal statehood, where several organizations handled mail delivery in different parts of the country. In 1848 it introduced a uniform postal rate for delivery within its borders and was also one of the first countries to introduce adhesive postage stamps.
Today Swiss Post is a public limited company, though still government-owned. The board of directors consists of two employees and four members from the cantonal governments who represent the interests of private shareholders. As part of its modernization program to improve service efficiency, it has outsourced some postal operations recently. It does not intend to privatize or sell any core business units, however. Its main competitors for letter delivery services are privately held DHL Express which provides global air express courier services; FedEx Corporation which offers worldwide express shipping with an emphasis on speed; UPS (United Parcel Service) covering both domestic and international shipments through their ground transport network.
Swiss Post offers different services delivery:
- Expedited Delivery service for an additional fee including Express International, BGB Priority, and Lieferart Suisse Priority. Items are delivered within one to three business days depending on the destination. This option is available only for items up to 30 kg (66 lbs.) each that can fit into a box measuring 60 cm in length or width of 23 cm in height. The maximum weight allowed per item varies by country: 50 kg in Austria, Germany, France, and Ireland; 70 kg in Spain; 90 kg in Italy and 100 kg elsewhere.
- Global priority envelope with a tracking number which includes insurance coverage of CHF 300 against loss or damage for value up to CHF 1000.
Delivery takes between five and seven business days depending on the destination, weight (maximum 70 kg per package), and type of service chosen (express/economy). Swiss Post does not ship firearms, dangerous goods, or live animals with its Economy service; these items must be sent using one of Swiss Post's other services only. Packages containing alcohol can also only be shipped by express delivery due to customs regulations in some countries outside Switzerland such as Australia.
